Mommy & Me

Things have turned upside down around our Front Porch... Daddy has been writing blog posts and taking photographs! But that means Mommy gets to be in front of the camera with me!

Q&A with Daddy

Ok, it’s finally here… the moment you have all been waiting for . . . or maybe not. It is the Adorable Loving Husband’s turn to write a blog post. That’s right, Chelsea has finally turned over the reins to me to write a post for what she has always told me was “our” blog. I have been bugging her about when I could write one of these things and I thought I would have a ton of things to say. Now it seems I have writer’s block.

First off, let me say that I am having an amazing time watching our little bundle of joy grow and become more aware of her surroundings. It still amazes me to look into her eyes and think that Chels and I made this cute little human being, even if she is staring blankly back at me! I cannot wait for the rest of this journey, but make sure that I cherish every moment along the way.

I have some questions from people that Chels gave me to answer, so I will do that.

What is your favorite thing to do with Kherington?
I would say that sitting in my recliner with her is my favorite time. I will either sit her on a pillow next to me with my arm around her or lay her on my chest so she can look at me. We really enjoyed watching basketball together as the NCAA tournament started. She would start to doze off and I would jump or say something at the T.V. and she would startle, nearly jumping out of my arms. I look forward to sharing my love of sports and the outdoors with her as she grows.

What has changed the most for you?
The biggest change that has come from Kherington being here is my schedule. I get up a little earlier now to give her the first feeding when we have extra breastmilk in the fridge. I like this time because she focuses on me and scans my face as I watch her eat. The other change is that I have become a bit of a lighter sleeper, although Chels might disagree. I may not be completely coherent but I do wake up sometimes if Kherington stirs or Chels is checking on her and ask if everything is ok. I will be back asleep in .5 seconds if everything is ok.

What do you call her?
I haven’t picked out a nick-name just yet. We are trying to stick with Kherington as much as possible, although I have a nick-name, and Chels has a nick-name from her father. Sometimes I call her Special K, but there might be some copyright infringement there. I am sure that at some point a name will come to me and that will stick, but until then it’s Kherington.

What has surprised you?
This is a great question and will probably be different for every father out there. For me it was how well I took to being a father. I was just talking to a friend yesterday that is about to have a baby in a couple months. We were talking about how he felt right now and that it had not really sunk in yet. I told him that most of it won’t until they wrap that baby up and put it in your arms in the delivery room, and everything changes that instant. That is when you realize the awesomeness of God and the creation that you two and He have made. It is surely a moment I will never forget.

Any baby or parenting gear you really like? Do you change dirty diapers?
I lumped these two together because I love our Pack and Play that has the changing pad attached to the top. It is high enough that I do not have to bend over too much to get to her and you have storage underneath to keep extra stuff. And yes, I do change dirty diapers… not near as many as Chels does, but I am not with her as much either. The smell and mess really are not that bad, for now.
The one thing I cannot wait to start using is the backpack holder thing. Kherington still cannot hold her head up for very long, although she is getting better, so I have not been able to use it. Therefore I cannot give a report on it yet, but I will as soon as I have tested it. (if I ever get to write again!)

And finally. . .

What age makes you nervous?
This is the one I have thought about from the day I found out we were going to have a girl. I still don’t quite have an answer. I worry about the “terrible twos” but know that we will be firm but fair with her. I worry that when she starts school she may be a little too country, but I know that her mother and I were always able to make friends, and she will too. I worry about the first time I take her hunting… if she will like it or not, but if she does not, it’s not the end of the world. I worry about when she starts dating, but I know that we will raise her to make smart decisions. And I have a lot of guns and knives to clean to help the boys make good decisions, too! I worry because I am her Father and that is what I will always do!

Well, apparently I lost the writer’s block 2 pages and 800 words ago. This is longer than most papers that I wrote in college, and I didn’t even have to adjust the spacing or make the font just a bit bigger to fill up that second page. Maybe it’s because this is about the greatest thing I have ever done in my life, help make a human being. She’s mine and she’s perfect, however she turns out. I love you Kherington Grace!

Kherington's Godparents!

We are thrilled and honored that Phillip & Kristin Kneupper have agreed to be Kherington's Godparents. K will love having them in her life... especially since it means she gets THREE handsome Godbrothers, too!

Meet Kayson, Kouper, and Kylar. {Kherington fits right in, don'tcha think?!} What a lucky girl to have these boys lookin' out for her.

We spent months discussing the perfect family to take on this role of guiding our daughter in her walk with Christ. We chose the Kneuppers because they aim to live a Godly life, share our morals and values, and believe in family.

We feel that God provided us with a strong Christian family to share Kherington's life and help support her in her faith. And we pray that she brings joy and a bit of femininity to their blessed boy-filled life.

We look forward to having them by our side as Kherington is baptized, gets confirmed, graduates, gets married, and all the adventures along the way.
We are certainly blessed to have the Kneuppers in our life, and we know Kherington will be, too.
God is Great!
and so are Godparents!

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions you had for me...

What is your favorite part of Motherhood?
Breastfeeding! Nursing is the most beautiful bond and I love those moments together.
Following close behind are bath time and watching Skip be a Daddy. This wouldn’t be near as much fun without my best friend right beside me.

What is your least favorite part of Motherhood?
Being late. Seriously… before baby I was rarely late anywhere. I hate being late. But I’m still learning to get us both ready and out the door while nursing on demand, wiping grimy faces, changing outfits after blowouts, and packing all that baby crap…

What surprised you?
How easy it is so far. {I really don’t want to jinx myself!} But honestly, Kherington is a great baby and we are falling seamlessly into a routine that is natural and comfortable.

What do you miss?
Even with Kherington in my arms, I miss being pregnant.
I miss my core muscles dearly.
As soon as I celebrate a little, I'm sure I'll miss being able to sleep in when hungover!
And I miss my husband! {What?! We're married, you know.}

Are you feeling healed and back to your old self?
Mostly, yes. I think the pain is gone. I still get tired very easily… the endurance will take some time.
The thought of nursing all night, getting us both ready in the morning, working a full day, and then coming home to make dinner, clean, love on my daughter and then do it all over again sounds exhausting!
As for being back to my old self… I never will be. I’m a mother now… and that means so many wonderful things. I love who I am and who I will be for the rest of my life.

Have you lost the baby weight?
Private question! But I'll answer...
The scale says yes. But my pre-pregnancy jeans say I still have some love handles and a mommy pooch to work off. (but at least they fit!)

Are you ready to go back to work?
Not even close. It breaks my heart to think about leaving her for more than a couple of hours. Childhood goes so fast. I don’t want to miss anything, and I want to be the one to teach her about this beautiful world.
{crap, now I’m crying}
I can’t abandon her in daycare for 40 hours a week.
I don’t want to quit my family business.
I don’t want to give up my photography.

Have you given Kherington a nickname yet?
We have terms of endearments for sure. But a nickname that will stick for life? Eh… still trying them out.
If you were asking if we shorten Kherington, the answer is no. We love the name, call her by her full name, and don’t regret our decision to give her a unique name.

What have you done to get out of the house?
I joined a Mom’s Bible Study. I’ve gone out to lunch, gone on walks, had a couple of dinners out, stopped by the office, gone grocery shopping, checked in with doctors, and I still have my monthly girl’s dinner called “Women Who W(h)ine & Dine.” K and I also joined Tai-Pan on our first roadtrip to East Texas to see my grandmother.

How are the pets adjusting to the baby?
Pretty well. At first Lucchese the cat would hiss and run away. Now she will venture closer if K is sleeping or nursing. But she would still rather not share her Mommy.
The dogs are curious and mostly gentle. They lick and sniff. Kherington is starting to notice them and sometimes smiles when they lick her. Occasionally they feel jealous, but we are very careful to give them just as much attention as before. And for all you people who claimed we wouldn’t care about them as much after the baby came… POO ON YOU! They are our babies, too.

An update on the blog post about products I love…

We found a used BOB Revolution Jogging stroller and we loooove it! It is perfect for the ranch; it rolls over manure with ease!

Kherington took to Breastflow Bottles like a champ! Most days Skip wakes up for the first morning feeding (breastmilk!) and I sleep in a bit.

I also couldn’t have done without these nursing bands. In the early weeks it allowed me to track what time she ate, how long she nursed, and which breast she nursed from. It was invaluable at 4 AM when I couldn’t even remember my name.

Finally, I just discovered the joy of reusable nursing pads. I don’t like them for purely granola-save-the-earth reasons… they just feel better! They are soft, absorbent, and don’t crinkle when I move around. Plus, they seem to wick away moisture more effectively. And whoever invented these for sore nipples is a genius!

Have some questions for Skip about Fatherhood?!

He doesn’t know it yet, but he will be doing a Q&A post to appease your curiosity. So leave questions for him in your comments or email me!
