Memorial Moments

We visited Lake LBJ for Memorial Day, where Kherington enjoyed her first dip in the lake (too wavy), her first boat ride (lulled to sleep immediately), and many naps in the soft lake breeze. We love sharing our favorite things with her!

3 Things

If you know me or read this blog, you know that I adore motherhood.

Every moment is such a blessing that I don't even mind the sleepless nights and poopy diapers. {Not that I have many of either}

BUT... there are some drawbacks. I don't mean baby weight, stretch marks, bodily fluids, crankiness, colic, or sore nipples.

Here are my three least favorite things about motherhood...

1. The Great Hair Shed that occurs around 4 months. {I mean me, but Kherington may be next}

2. Day care prices that rival mortgage payments. ouch.

3. When people park so close to you that you can't even get the car seat in the vehicle. {and yes, I'm perfectly aware I used to be one of the aforementioned people in my huge red truck}

4 Months

Kherington Grace, you are 4 months old today!

Time flies when you're having fun!

You have long outgrown Bevo Bear... so quickly that we forgot to put you in his outfit while it still fit you!

Photobucket

Dear daughter, at four months old:

-You weigh 15 pounds 6 ounces... little chunker! (85th%)

-You are 23.75 inches long

-You sleep up to 10 hour stretches at night and still sleep about 16 hours a day. Our amazing little sleeper!

-You love, love mirrors! Smiling, giggling, and making faces at that cute baby is fun!

-You are called "Chunky Monkey" by Mommy. Also Doll Face, Angel, Booger, and Beauty.

-You still haven't even tried to roll over.

-You drool a lot.

-You hate bottles with a passion. Babysitters feed you by letting you lap out of a spoon or using a medicine plunger. We have tried 20 different tricks and 5 different nipples. We'll figure it out eventually... maybe.

-You wear size 2 diapers and 6 month clothing.

-You think your hands are pretty cool.

-You enjoy standing, baby wearing, watching the world, and looking at the tv.

-You love kisses.

-You have an adorable habit of raising one eyebrow... driving Daddy crazy because he can't do it and we can!

-You are crazy about your monkey lovie.

-You babble a lot and favor a dramatic sucking-in sound. You talk to your toys and talk yourself to sleep.

-You still rarely cry and are very chill and easy-going.

-You like to hold Daddy's thumb.

-You play with Mommy's hair while nursing, or pull your own.

-You love faces... humans, puppies, illustrated cartoons... especially kids and your cousins.

-You still work with Mommy... and might have to until September!

-You get more fun and more beautiful each and every day!

Four

Today...

Photobucket

We celebrate four years as husband and wife and four months as Mommy & Daddy.

Photobucket

Skip and I have been together 8.5 years, but these last four have been a dream come true. We have nurtured a healthy, loving marriage that is the ideal foundation for our growing family. God has truly blessed us.

Of course, we celebrated our anniversary in style. Last night we road tripped to Austin (leaving Kherington with Sissy & Tai-Pan for her first overnight!). We have a four year tradition of eating at Hooter's for our anniversary. I realize that most people wouldn't consider this romantic... but Skip has promised a trip to an exotic Hooters for our tenth anniversary! I'm thinking Aruba or the Virgin Islands!

Photobucket

After dinner we went to a Doug Moreland concert at Hill's Cafe...

Photobucket

And then caught Dale Watson at the Broken Spoke for some true Texas boot scootin'!

Photobucket

I am so in love and so very, very happy.

Photobucket

Happy anniversary baby!

Cloth Diaper Review/Giveaway

I am a part-time cloth diapering mama. Read about my decision to cloth diaper here. Read about how I do it, here.

I've been keeping notes and forming opinions on the diapers I own. Keep in mind that I've only been doing this about 4 months and my opinions are based upon a 15 pound baby girl that is not a heavy wetter or a frequent pooper.

Now for the reviews...

Photobucket

Diaper-Thirsties Duo Pocket Diapers
Approximate Cost- $18.50
One Place to Buy- No Pins Required
Pros- These diapers are designed with double leg gussets to hold in leaks… great idea. They also have a narrow crotch that looks more comfortable on baby. These diapers claim that you don’t need to remove the insert from the pocket to wash. This is true… but I’ve found that every single one of my pocket diapers agitates loose in the wash.
Cons- I am not a fan of this velcro… it is unreliable and could pop off at any time! Despite the leg gussets, this diaper leaks. This size is supposed to fit until 18 pounds or 9 months and it is already too small. The extra leg snaps seem to dig into chunky thighs.
My Take- I had high hopes for this diaper and am disappointed. I wish they would redesign it with improvements and snaps. B-

Diaper- Thirsties Duo Diaper Cover
Approximate Cost- $12.50
One Place to Buy- Franklin Goose
Pros- Holds in all leaks! Double leg gussets and great fit.
Cons- Must be used with a fitted diaper, a prefold, or a disposable underneath. It takes 4 sizes to get from birth to potty training.
My Take- This is great for trips. I put it over a disposable and know I won’t have leaks. They just made some with snaps, and next time I’ll get those. A-

Photobucket

Diaper- Bum Genius One Size All in One Organic
Approximate Cost- $24.95
One Place to Buy- Full Circle Baby (New Braunfels!)
Pros- Never leaks, nothing to stuff/insert, great absorbency, simple. This diaper has a great fit.
Cons- Since the inserts are sewn in, you can’t adjust for heavy or light wetters. This diaper takes forever to dry. I put in dryer and then hang on the line. The extra leg snaps seem to press into her thighs, but she never seems to notice. Might be bulky for a baby on the move.
My Take- I love this diaper for overnight or times when I expect heavy wetting. This is simple enough for beginners; you really can’t screw it up. A

Photobucket

Diaper- gDiapers {with cloth and disposable inserts}
Approximate Cost- $15 (plus disposable inserts at $0.45 each or cloth inserts 6/$25)
One Place to Buy- Diapers.com
Pros- gDiapers are cute with a great fit and thin, flexible material. Soft leg gussets are a huge plus. You can trash poopy disposable inserts and know it is still good for the environment. Seems to be crawling-friendly.
Cons-Disposable inserts are a bit pricey. (10 cents more than disposables can add up) Poops can be messy, as it often gets on the liner and needs to be rinsed. Cloth inserts can leak. {maybe because I am using generic cloth inserts?} You need 3 sizes to get from birth to potty training. {But you need fewer covers since you don't have to wash them very often}
My Take- I love these and would use them all the time if the inserts were a little cheaper. I wasn’t crazy about them at first, but they’ve grown on me so much. I love the disposable inserts and that the covers rarely need to be washed. The velcro has never unsnapped on Kherington, but it has in the dryer. It takes a minute to get the liner and insert in place, but it is my go-to diaper. A

Photobucket

Diaper- Blueberry Minky Pocket Diapers
Approximate Cost- $32.97
One Place to Buy-
Blueberry
Pros- Adorable designs and super soft minky! These diapers don’t leak. Two insert options, a large one that has one microfiber and two hemp pieces and a smaller one for small babies or to use as a doubler for heavy wetters.
Cons- The inserts are sewn together, so you have to use all 3 layers at once. It should fit her for a long time, so right now the extra fabric on the wings is a bit annoying. Quite pricey.
My Take- If the inserts came separately instead of sewn, I’d be thrilled. I love this diaper, but it would be quite expensive to buy several of them. But splurging for one or two extra cute ones is fun. Better for chunky babies. A-

Photobucket

Diaper- Blueberry Mini Deluxe Pocket Diapers
Approximate Cost- $18.90
One Place to Buy- Diaper Ware
Pros- Perfect for babies under 10 pounds. No leaks.
Cons- Liners are sewn together.
My Take- Excellent diaper if you want to cloth diaper a newborn… but they poop so often at that age that I found disposables much easier. A-

Photobucket

Diaper- FuzziBunz Perfect Size Pocket Diaper
Approximate Cost- $18.95
One Place to Buy- Cotton Babies
Pros- Thin, light, and flexible shell. Great fit, not too bulky. Seems to be crawling-friendly.
Cons- Crotch seems a bit wide.
My Take- I really like these diapers and they seem comfortable for Kherington. Never lets me down. A+

Photobucket

Diaper- Totsbots Bamboozles
Approximate Cost- $20
One Place to Buy- Cotton Tail Baby
Pros- Super, super soft and absorbent. 4 layers of bamboo.
Cons- Crazy wide crotch. Not waterproof and seems too bulky to fit under a cover. (at least until she is much older)
My Take- This diaper is still too big for Kherington, so I don’t use it yet. I love the softness, but it just doesn’t seem practical to shove it under a cover. B-

Photobucket

Diaper- Kissaluvs 2.0 Cotton Fleece Fitted Cloth Diaper
Approximate Cost- $12.95
One Place to Buy- Kissaluvs
Pros- Very affordable. Great, snug fit. Very soft. Fits skinny and chunky babies.
Cons- Bulky under a diaper cover. When changing, you still have to touch the wetness. Poop stains don't rinse out very well and I always need to hang it in the sun.
My Take- Using a pocket or AIO is so much easier. B

Still to come! Reviews of the following:
Chubby Cheeks AI2 One Size with Bamboo (waaaay cute fabrics!)
Kushies Swim Diapers

My Two Cents

-Gourmet dog food found in your grocer's refrigerator?! Eww. Give me a break.

-Our little girl is full of smiles all day long. But when I bring out my camera or a video camera, it is near impossible to catch one. Doesn't Kherington know she is a photographer's daughter?!

-Breastfeeding is amazing and has hundreds of benefits for mom and baby. Why in the world wouldn't you at least try it?!

-People often call Kherington a boy. "How old is your little boy?" And that truly doesn't bother me... she isn't always in pink, her ears aren't pierced (soon though!), and most of my baby things are gender neutral. So I just politely say "She is 3 and a half months" and move on. No worries. But honestly... if you aren't sure, why don't you just say "your baby?"

-They really need to hurry up with the male birth control pill. My options are limited with my clotting issues. I tried the mini pill and it hurt my milk supply so I gave them the 'ol heave-ho. Shouldn't men do this one thing for us? {since I know you are going to ask... yes, we want more kids, but preferably about 3 years apart}

-Does anyone really replace the original cap on the mylicon drops instead of just using the dropper? I understand why they recommend it... but I'm too lazy to bother.

-I've heard some horrible things about the new Pampers Dry Max causing awful diaper rash and blisters... beware! What better time to try cloth diapers?! {but I use pampers baby dry overnight and love them}

-I wish losing weight was as much fun as gaining it.

-I'm addicted to Etsy.com... Can't. Stay. Away. I love criss-cross swing tops for little girls and I just had my new friend Curious Georgia custom make this adorable outfit for Kherington. {I know, I know... my child does NOT need more clothing!} But maybe yours does... so check her out!

-Uptight Moms make me laugh. Parenting is supposed to be fun, people. relax!

-There is this amazing new church opening near us called Hope Arise. It is young and fresh and full of {everlasting} life! If you are inclined to check it out, their first real service is this Sunday!

-Our family is up to something BIG! We are so proud of Skip, but aren't quite ready to announce his good news. Details forthcoming...

-I really am working on the cloth diaper review. It is a lot of data to acquire and analyze! Hopefully Friday...

Confession

I have a confession to make...

I think our daughter looks like me.

{gasp}

Everyone says she looks exactly like Skip.

To be fair, I said the same thing at first. Like him, she currently has soft rounded features, while mine are sharp and angular. But the fact is, all babies are soft and round for awhile. {yummy breastmilk chubbin' her up!}

We don't actually know what/who she will look like yet.

Don't get me wrong... I'll be thrilled if Kherington looks like her handsome father. And someday I want a little boy that is his spitting image.

But I am with her all day, every day and I see me.

I see my own expressions... my smile, my pout, and my eyes. Without a doubt, my daughter looks like my baby photos and sometimes her facial expressions make me feel like I'm looking in a mirror.

So while I am proud when (hundreds of) people say "She's beautiful, she looks just like her Daddy..." I wonder why no one ever sees what I see.

Maybe it is silly that I need others to see what Kherington got from me. My love for her isn't based on inheritated traits. I know if I adopted a child I'd love him/her just as fiercly... and I'd probably still look for bits of myself.

I'm just so proud of my child and my future children! I know the glory belongs to God, but we all have our pride ya know?

Just once I want to hear "Your daughter is beautiful, she looks a lot like you!"

No matter who Kherington takes after as her features start looking more girl and less baby... we know that God has given us an amazing gift and we just strive to raise a beautiful person who lives a Godly life.

And knowing that she is cute as pie... well, that's just icing on the cake!
