Getting Back from Giving Back

I've been a volunteer with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America for 4 years. I've been matched with my current little sister, Elisa, for 3 years next week.

Photobucket

98% of the time I loooove being a Big.
Elisa and I have a great relationship and I truly feel like I can make a positive difference in her life. I make her a better person and she does the same for me. And we have a blast.

But I won't lie, there are the times when I'm exhausted and don't feel like driving the half hour each way to see her. Times I have to deal with her less than perfect family. Times when her teenage attitude rubs me the wrong way.

And many, many times when I think I can't take one more millisecond of Radio Disney.

But I always suck it up, and I'm always glad I did.

Especially when she goes and does something like this...

And that, my friends, is worth all the Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber in the world...

Miss Kherington, you are 5 months old today!

Photobucket

You are changing so quickly and we adore interacting with you.
Chunky Monkey, at five months old...

-You weigh 17 pounds!

-You are almost 25 inches tall

-You still won’t take bottles so you sip breastmilk from a cup when necessary

-You enjoy floating in the pool and splashing

-You explore our faces with your hands

-You are getting good at the “tri-pod” sit

-You finally rolled over, but rarely do it

-You always sleep in the car

-You enjoy your play gym, your saucer, and your walker

-You love books, even turning the pages in your board books

-You have started fighting your afternoon nap

-You got your ears pierced and only cried for a few seconds

-You wear clothing up to size 12 months

-You eat rice cereal and I can’t wait to explore new tastes with you next month

-You went to the beach and enjoyed the feel of the sand

-You always want to see what is going on

-You have some serious thunder thighs

-You suck your entire fist when you get hungry

-You are always happy and being around you is truly a pleasure

Weighing in on Baby Weight

Let’s talk about baby weight.

We all deal with it.

And it is absolutely worth it for a healthy, happy babe… but that doesn’t mean we have to like it.

I’ll admit I am very lucky to have only gained 22ish pounds during the pregnancy, and to have lost those pounds by my 6 week check-up.

But while the number on the scale might be the same… my body is certainly not the same.

Things have softened and migrated… ahem, mostly south. Muscle mass has been replaced by blubber. I mean, Back fat?!?! Where did that even come from?!!?

I’ll admit that the first three months postpartum, I didn’t even try to exercise or eat right. In May I gave a solid 50% effort, and June has been a 75% effort so far. I’ve lost six more pounds, but that’s just a drop in the bucket.

Breastfeeding has certainly helped me slim down. It burns a lot of calories, which rocks. Breastfeeding also signals your body to hold on to a little extra "fuel," in case baby needs it. Not to mention the 5 pounds of water weight and the ounces of milk currently in the udders. But you need to consume plenty of extra calories every day to keep your milk supply up. I’d rather be chunky than forced to wean. Dieting can cause you to dry up.

But let’s be clear… I don’t diet. That low carb, no carb, count every calorie, south beach crap isn’t for me. Anytime I want to slim down, I work out and make slightly better food decisions. I don’t deprive myself and I still eat…. A lot. I love food. Eating is enjoyable and I don’t ever want to change that.

I’ve always been pretty comfortable in my skin… with a healthy, strong body. I have never been a size 2, but I find curves sexy and feminine. I don’t care about the number on the scale, just how I feel and how my clothes fit. My “happy” clothes, that is.

See…I have this ridiculous range of clothing sizes in my closet. Let’s break it down… “skinny-never-gunna-fit-me-again-haven’t-worn-in-ten-years-go-ahead-and-donate-them-already” clothing, “happy-weight-looked-good-felt-good-was-healthy-wore-when-we-got-married” clothing, “got-lazy-and-comfortable-was-a-little-heavy-suck-in-the-tummy-happy-clothes-got-too-tight” clothing, “pregnant-so-cute-love-my-belly-so-comfortable-not-allowed-to-wear-again-until-preggars” clothing, and “post-baby-hide-the-soft-belly-and-backfat-easy-to-breastfeed-in” clothing.

But I digress. So...we’ve established that I need calories to make milk and that I am a hungry girl that misses her “happy” clothes. That leaves exercise.

I actually enjoy exercise… once I’m in shape, anyway.

But exercise isn’t an easy answer either. It takes time. Time this two job workin', home makin’, breastfeedin’ mama doesn’t have an abundance of.

Losing one pound means burning 3,500 calories.

That’s like 24 hours of pushing a stroller. Or 8 hours of unloading groceries. Or 16 hours of chasing a toddler around the park…assuming, of course, that you don’t stop at McDonald’s on the way home.

Losing weight is hard for most women. Just putting out the effort is tough. Not to mention finding the time and finding childcare. To run I need to catch Skip or my parents at a good time, and to go to the gym I have to make an appointment in the nursery. (and tell Skip to eat something from the freezer for dinner)

But I’m working on it. I think I’ll kick it up to 85% effort and do the best I can… always reminding myself how much I love my body for giving me this perfect baby. Eventually I’ll brave a bikini again. They say it takes 9 months to put it on and 9 months to get it off.

I’m aiming to lose 1 or 2 pounds a week and tone up. Totally doable, but not easy. Now it’s out there. You, blog world, are here to hold me accountable.

I’ll put in the sweat for now. But after I'm done having kids, sign me up for a “Mom Job!”

What do you do to drop the baby weight?

More Time

There simply aren't enough hours in the day. I've taken on a lot, and I need more time.

If I had unlimited time today, I would be able to...

Be a full time breastfeeding, babywearing, cloth diapering Mommy
Be a fun, attentive, passionate wife
Work fullish time at the office
Run my photography business part time
Clean the house
Go to church/Bible study
Spend more time with
my little sister
Pick vegetables in the garden
Play with the dogs
Work out for an hour
Donate breastmilk to a milk bank
Do the laundry
Read a good book
Nap in the hammock with Kherington
Buy groceries
Spend a leisurely hour or two preparing dinner
Expand my blogging
Go on a date with my husband
Sleep a blissful 8 hours
Laugh myself silly at girl’s night
Take a walk around the ranch
Pay the bills and manage the budget
Plan a roadtrip or vacation
Take Kherington to gymboree, the library, the zoo
Bake cookies from scratch
Ride the horses
Enroll Kherington in swimming lessons

Give more compliments
Put more time into my appearance
Renew my passport, get Kherington one
Complete my defensive driving course
Use my bender ball more than once a week
Get Kherington’s ears pierced
Purge all the crap we don’t need
Send handwritten letters to faraway friends

Wish on a star
Take more photography courses
Share more hugs and kisses

Host a swap party
Be a better friend
Shave… better yet, get laser hair removal
Wash the dogs

Brush up on my nursery rhymes and fairy tales
Have a cold beer
Spend more time behind the camera
Sell some land
Take all 37 animals to the vet

Cuddle with my husband
Volunteer
Play Scrabble

I could go on and on. Instead, I think I'll try to cross a few of these off of my list! {look at that, yet one more thing to do!}

What would you do with more time?

Today

The Tuesday after Memorial Day 2009 we learned that we were pregnant with Kherington.

We prayed that our third time would be the charm.

And Oh! What a charmer she is!
